You (as gallery admin) should use FTP-upload plus batch-add (only the admin can do this). There are several methods to upload files within Coppermine. However, the ability to upload is being limited by several factors that coppermine doesn't have the power to change.
All of this stuff happens "behind the scenes" - coppermine is taking care of this, so you don't have to know what exactly is happening. Additionally to the file that is being stored on the webspace, a database record is being created for each file uploaded. What actually happens during upload is that the image uploaded gets resized and a thumbnail is being created.
Coppermine is a web gallery, so the key aspect of it's usage is the ability of the admin (or the users if the admin allows them to upload) to upload images (or rather files) to the gallery - without files being uploaded, a gallery doesn't make much sense.
